Deutsche Stiftung Organtransplantation (DSO) is the national organ procurement organisation in Germany. It is a private, non-profit organisation in form of an incorporated foundation under private law and it is legally commissioned for coordinating post-mortem organ donation (see §11 TPG). All of the DSO’s tasks and responsibilities are settled in an agreement with its contracting authorities, the German Medical Association, the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds and the German Hospital Federation.
The organisation coordinates all activities within an organ donation procedure and provides a range of services to support hospitals around the clock. These services include the verification of the medical and legal prerequisites for organ donation, the counselling for organ-protective intensive care, the organisation of the removal and preservation of organs and the organisation of the transport of organs to the transplant centres.
